Accompanied by Thunder, the dog who rescued him from the firing line in France, World War veteran Ray Chambers goes to the mountains to recover from his war injuries. There he meets Martha Larned, a lonely mountain girl who lives with her little brother, Dick. Ray discovers that Martha is the sister of his dead buddy, Frank Larned, and he decides to stay and protect her from harassment by Jim Howard and his halfwitted brother, Ez. When Dick is hurt in a fall, Ray goes for a doctor; Ez kills Jim and attacks Martha; and Thunder takes care of Ez. Ray and Martha then get married. (AFI Catalog)
This restoration is based on a 35mm tinted nitrate print and two duplicate negatives from The Packard Humanities Institute’s collection held by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and portions of a 35mm print with Russian intertitles from the collection of Gosfilmofond of Russia. With three exceptions, all titles are the original American versions. Two intertitles that were only present in the Russian print have been replaced by English recreations, and “The End” which was absent from all surviving sources, is also reproduced. All replica titles are marked with “2025” in the lower right corner. The color tinting matches the coloring scheme of The Packard Humanities Institute’s original nitrate print. In accordance with archival restoration ethics, digital intervention was limited to mitigating damage and accumulated wear suffered by the original film materials. This restoration was completed in June 2025 by the San Francisco Film Preserve in conjunction with Gosfilmofond of Russia, The Packard Humanities Institute, and the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
